Kid's name: Hortense!

Type of danger: molten lava that is actually chocolate. It's tantalizing but too hot to touch.

Okay I love both of these so much. What if Idyllwild's Tahquitz mountain just started spewing molten chocolate over Palm Springs?

And Hortense is a great name.

Arielle should definitely be one of the kid’s moms. The ex who is also one of the moms should be a “real” witch, but the other mom should be a regular human and they thought the magic might not transfer over. The period should be what set off the wards = new witch coming into power.

The kid should have a name that is something that could be in a past oracle prediction our protagonist knows of - the prediction/name could be “a new witch shall arrive with a storm to come in 12 years time.” So name the kid “Gale” for example. Selene won’t turn them in mostly to save her own ass though. The danger they should be in should be something that comes with mixed kid problems (inability to control and accidentally creating power surges for example).

So many great ideas for the book in this one comment! I'm addressing these by topic!

ARIELLE:

There's a part of me that likes the fake out that Arielle is the mom and she's just visiting the cabin where she used to live, but I think the story is better with your idea that Arielle is the mom (and maybe she's lived there all these years).

THE OTHER MOM:

What if it's the opposite, Arielle dated another witch, and she doesn't know it? She thinks the other mom is a witch in the sense that she likes sage smudging and feminist drum circles, not like she has a well of power she can tap into. What then is it about Arielle that draws magic to her? I also think the other mom could be Latina and play into this growing fear in the witch community of powerful people coming up from South America (and comment on anti-immigration propaganda we have now).

THE FAMILY:

Are the two moms together? Married? Monogamous? Poly? Is there a polycule?

THE KID:

I love this portent idea! Also, what if the portent had come to Selene and she'd secretly whispered the powerful name to Arielle one night in a moment of intimacy and that's where it passed on to Arielle to call the kid that?

And 100% love the mixed kid problems idea, for both race and magic. You've made me want to have more mixed characters in your input on my other books.
