I Meant to Write About Resurrection. The Voladores Had Other Plans.

I sat down to write about resurrection myths across history. Instead I found myself back in Chapultepec Park, watching men fall from the sky and remembering why I make art.

Dear friend,

Today, I wanted to write a whole article about the resurrection stories throughout time. I love how the tales of the Sumerian goddess Ereshkigal and her sister Inanna – two of my favorite figures in religious history – and how their story became Hecate and Persephone to the Greeks, then Lilith and Eve to the Jews, and even was incorporated into stories of Jesus’s resurrection.

I wanted to geek out over the history of magical myths and how religious tales help us to make sense of a complex and hard world.

But then I sat down to write and all I could think about was the Voladores of Veracruz.

I kept remembering the way they surrendered to the ritual, having patience for the process, going around and around and around again all in a beautiful dance to their gods.

And how much that inspired me to keep going, both as an artist and as a human.

So, instead of my nerdy history lesson, I’m giving you an excerpt from a book I am writing about my time in Mexico City.

I hope you find magic in it like I did.

With love,

Lauren

P.S. This is what it looks like to live a boldly creative life. Not just the travel to Mexico, but also following what calls to you even when the "strategic" thing is something else entirely.

If you want help building that kind of life for yourself, I have four spots left in my Creative Life Blueprint program. We start April 17. Reply to this email if you want in.

P.P.S. While my Sunday letters are usually free, this book is a work in progress and I can’t yet share it publicly for the whole internet to see, so I’m putting the excerpt behind a paywall. Thanks for understanding and supporting my work.
